Cheap netbooks are one thing, but what about free netbooks? The offers are everywhere, but are free netbooks a good deal?

Are free netbooks really free?
Yes and no. The situation is very like that with mobile phones where some

people never actually bother buying the hardware at all.

You can get a free netbook (or even a free laptop) by signing a contract  to take out a 3G mobile broadband service with one  of the mobile broadband suppliers. The contracts are usually monthly and tend to last for two years. After that you can keep the free netbook and even switch suppliers if you like.

But if you’ve got a netbook with a built in modem rather than a dongle, the netbook may be locked to a single supplier.

Which netbooks are free?
You can get the top netbooks (including those we recommend at cheap netbooks) as free netbooks on a mobile broadband contract.

If there’s a netbook you’ve set your heart on, you’re sure to find it for free by looking in the offers on The Link’s website. That will also save you the hassle of checking every single mobile broadband supplier for yourself and due to their huge buying power they will actually give you a better deal than you could get on your own.

How do I use my free netbook?
Typically, the mobile broadband supplier will send you a choice of free netbooks and a free dongle. You’ll use the dongle to connect your free netbook to the internet in the normal way, and will have to stay with that supplier for the length of your contract. Check out my article on 3G mobile broadband for more about dongles.

So should I get a free netbook?
That depends.
If you’ve already got a mobile broadband contract, you may be committed to your current mobile broadband supplier.
If you’re going to use your free netbook mainly at home or in wifi hotspots, then the expense of a monthly contract may not be for you.
But if you’re going to use 3G broadband regularly and find the cost ok, then a free netbook or laptop could be just the thing for you.

Many people have mobile phone contracts with the latest phones for free, and get a really good deal. The same applies to free netbooks and mobile broadband.

And thanks to www.cheap-netbooks.org.uk, all the key information is at your fingertips.

Wondered what the fuss was about with free netbooks, I was checking out all the suppliers of free netbooks myself and after three hours I couldnt find anything I wanted and still had half of them to go. Theres loads of free netbooks available but really confusing

Anyway, i looked at the link and they’ve got got some brilliant free netbooks - i picked up a free samsung nc10 and a Vodafone3G contract for only 25 notes a month and just in time to catch the rugby league. So far, free netbooks rule :-)
