windows 7 could be good news for cheap netbooks
Well we’ve tested the Release Candidate (provisional version ) of Windows 7 for you to see how it compares with with Windows XP on a cheap netbook, and amazingly enough it’s just as fast!
Yes we took our favourite cheap netbook, the Samsung NC10 already loaded with Windows XP and installed Windows 7 Release candidate on it, then fired it up.
And although the Samsung NC10 is no slouch, the new release of Windows proved surprisingly just as fast.
Now Microsoft operating systems normally get bigger, heavier and slower the newer they are, but Windows 7 looks to be at least as fast.
Our own tests of Windows 7 versus Windows XP on the Samsung NC10 showed no real difference in speed, though some reports we’ve read claim Windows 7 is faster. A lot depends on what apps you are running at the time, and our test was not officially scientific.
But we’ll see towards the end of the year is netbook manufacturers start shipping their cheap netbooks with Windows 7 instead of XP.
Either way, if you buy a netbook with XP and want to try out Windows 7, that’s easy enough to do using the USB connection as a bootable drive.
Me, I’m going to wait a few months before changing, but at least the signs are good that installing the very newest operating system won’t grind your netbook to a halt.
