How to watch TV on your netbook

A great feature of netbooks that they don’t boast about is you can watch live TV on the move.  We all know that you can watch downloaded videos as well as TV clips from Youtube, but did you know you can watch live TV on a netbook anywhere with internet access.

No need for a TV tuner
Before broadband and wifi you needed to buy a TV tuner for your computer, but now BBC and ITV do their own live streaming of TV channels that you can watch live over the internet.

But what I find so much easier is to use a brilliant website called TV Catchup. Ignore the  name - it’s not catchup at all, it’s every single channel you can get on FREEVIEW transmitted live as it happens. You need to register to use it, but that’s a 30 second job, and then it’s free. It gives you brilliant full screen high quality TV. On all the free channels.

There’s even a programme guide just like on your Freeview TV.

So wherever I am, I don’t miss what’s happening on Corrie or Eastenders or Holby City or Hollyoaks or….I’d better not go on or you’d think I spend all my time watching soaps on my netbook. But honestly the picture is so good that I could!

As far as live TV goes, it’s completely glitch-free, but if you want to download programmes and save them for later, i’ll be talking about ways to do that another time.

and that’s one reason I wouldn’t be without my Acer Aspire One A150 Linux netbook. It  saves a good £50 over the Windows netbook, and it’s just as easy to use. (Don’t you dare say “If she can use it, then anybody can!!”).

It’s one of the cheapest, lightest netbooks, but big enough to use comfortably and has a fabulous display too. And the hard disk is massive - I’ve got loads of episodes of CSI on there I’ve not found time to watch yet.
